German Government Prepares to Revoke Asylum Status for Thousands of Syrians in Germany
The “Germany Liberation Network” website reported that the German government is preparing to review the asylum status of thousands of Syrians residing in the country, particularly unemployed adult men who rely on government social assistance.
The website quoted Alexander Trom, spokesperson for the parliamentary group of the governing Christian Union, as saying that the Interior Ministry intends, as a first step, to instruct the relevant authorities to reopen the asylum files of people in this category and reassess their cases.
At the same time, doctors and healthcare workers are expected to be given the opportunity to change their residence status to a work-based residence permit, enabling them to continue living legally in Germany on professional grounds.
Trom also noted that the government intends to increase the financial incentives offered for voluntary departure, with the aim of encouraging as many Syrians as possible to return. He explained that voluntary return is less costly for the state than forced deportation procedures.
According to reports published by German media, approximately 450,000 Syrians out of nearly 900,000 living in Germany rely on government-provided social assistance.
