Is there popular sovereignty in Iran?

In this sense, the West expressed its unconditional support for the former Shah monarchy and has adopted the same stance in dealing with the Mullahs’ dictatorship, which has created a long-lasting state of political decay that has fueled the resentment of the peoples of the region, foremost among them the Iranian people seeking their stolen freedom and kidnapped dignity for decades and decades.
The Shah monarchy era was imposed by the West to serve its interests, with ambitions high and limitless, aligning with desires that defy convention and acknowledgment, disregarding even the slightest human feelings represented by the collective consciousness of the Iranian people. Consequently, it aimed to undermine and silence anything that contradicts the Western agenda, despite the obvious motives that provoke the hostility of regional peoples toward policies far from rationality, and which mock all civilized human values in pursuit of cementing the rule of oppressors at the expense of peoples with rights robbed the very peoples who have no choice but to confront all available means to escape the nightmare of escalating tyranny day after day.
The Iranian people's uprising to overthrow the Mullah regime and replace it with a democratic national system is a movement rooted in the core desires and aspirations of the people for a decent life filled with peace alongside other nations.
Ms. Maryam Rajavi, the elected President of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, delivered an important speech at the European Parliament session held in Strasbourg on June 18, 2025, where she presented profound and fundamental solutions for Iran's future. She emphasized the necessity of structural change to achieve freedom and social justice in a future Iran, pointing to the deep multi-dimensional crisis imposed by the religious regime on Iran. She stated: “Today, Iran is on the brink of a historic transformation because the crisis of the fall of the religious regime has overwhelmed all pillars of power. The Iranian people are more than ever committed to change.” She also pointed to the recent regional war that erupted on June 13, 2025, which contradicts Western appeasement policies towards Tehran and has destabilized the region.
Ms. Rajavi affirmed: “It is appeasement that has led to war, and the true solution is the change of the regime by the hand of the people and organized resistance.” She described the Mullah system as irreformable, a source of terrorism, and relentlessly pursuing nuclear weapons. She highlighted the need for recognition of Iranian resistance, saying, “What we have always wanted is resistance, just as Europeans once resisted religious fascism.”
She also addressed over 1,350 executions in Iran since August 2024—the highest execution rate globally—and noted more than 3,000 protest actions carried out by resistance units in the past year. She declared: “There are no protests or resistance for change as widespread and persistent as in Iran.”
At the end of her speech, she emphasized that the only way to achieve lasting peace and stability in Iran and the region is through regime change by the people and organized resistance. She called on the international community to support this solution and recognize the rights of the Iranian people to freedom and democracy.
Furthermore, she added: “The war that began at dawn on Friday, June 13, marks the start of a dangerous phase in Iran’s situation and regional shifts. But I must confirm that the real war is that which began over 44 years ago, specifically on June 20, 1981—that is, the Iranian people's resistance against the rule of religious fascism. Its only solution is the fall of this regime at the hands of the people and resistance of Iran.”
Therefore, we say: No to the Shah regime, and no to the Mullahs’ regime, because the Iranian people reject any form of tyranny and want freedom—and only freedom. It is time for the European Parliament and its member states to officially recognize the struggle of the Iranian people and the legitimacy of the youth uprising for freedom against the Mullah regime and its repressive forces, which lack any sense of patriotism and are destined for inevitable fall, imminent under God’s will.
The political scene under the rule of the oppressive Mullah regime has sustained its existence through broad Western support, enabling it to oppress the Iranian people, kill and displace regional peoples, and devastate their economies. This extensive support has hindered all Iranian popular uprisings aimed at overthrowing the regime and replacing it with a democratic national system based on the ten-article program adopted by the Iranian resistance led by Ms. Maryam Rajavi.
Not only did the West support the Mullahs, but it also worked to restrict the activities of the Iranian resistance to serve the regime’s continuation in power.
Today, the West seeks two things: first, to destroy the Iranian state, as they did with Iraq and Syria which is entirely rejected; and second, to impose a new political regime outside the will of the people, re-marketing remnants of the toppled Shah’s dictatorship to impose those bloodstained remnants, whose.
There is no option but to stand by the Iranian people and their resistance, and to support the Ten-Point Program for a free, democratic, and non-nuclear Iran. There is no better choice than listening to the voice of the Iranian people, who reject the Shah monarchy's dictatorship and the Mullahs' tyranny.
