Smuggling Intensifies Between the Tartous Countryside and Lebanon as Boats and Hidden Routes Are Used to Transport Young Men
Irregular crossings from the Hamidiya area in the Tartous countryside toward Lebanese territory have resumed, amid an increase in the transportation of young men by sea toward the city of Tripoli. Land routes and border paths away from official crossings also continue to be used, according to information obtained by the Syrian Observatory.
According to sources, the area has witnessed increased activity linked to the smuggling of young men since the beginning of this month. Reports indicate that boats have been used to transport groups of them to Tripoli, while crossings continue via rugged and concealed land routes.
These developments coincide with reports that a number of former officers—particularly those holding junior ranks—are being pursued in several areas. This has prompted some individuals to seek alternative crossing routes away from official checkpoints and border crossings.
Meanwhile, smuggling operations continue along secret routes between Balkala and Hamidiya, including through channels and sewage systems, according to informed sources. Smuggling networks remain active on both sides of the border.
The Syrian Observatory warned of the growing risks resulting from continued irregular crossings by land and sea, noting that such routes pose a threat to civilians’ lives, particularly young men who use unsafe paths to reach Lebanese territory.
