Abdi: Kurdish-Language Education Is a Fundamental Right and a File Under Discussion
Syrian Presidential Adviser Mazloum Abdi affirmed that education in the Kurdish language represents “a fundamental and natural right of the Kurdish people,” noting that establishing Kurdish as part of Syria’s education system is one of the key issues being addressed during the transitional phase.
In a video message, Abdi said that establishing an education system based on the Kurdish language, despite the conditions of war and limited resources, constituted “a historic step.” He explained that efforts over the past two years had focused on consolidating Kurdish as an official language of instruction.
He added that talks and meetings held on the issue had resulted in the Ministry of Education issuing a decision regarding the teaching of Kurdish. However, the decision faced objections from parents and students, who considered it insufficient. Abdi affirmed his support for these demands, describing them as legitimate.
Abdi called on families to send their children to schools where Kurdish is the primary language of instruction, in order to ensure the continuity of education during the current academic year and strengthen calls for expanding Kurdish linguistic rights.
He noted that the ninth-grade and third-secondary-year curricula would be taught in Kurdish, pointing to the continuation of meetings and discussions regarding the legal status of Rojava and Kobani universities.
He also urged students who obtained their secondary-school certificates from Kurdish-language schools to apply through the Ministry of Higher Education’s admission process, enabling them to compete for places at the two universities.
