Congress Votes to Compel Trump to End the War with Iran
In a move carrying significant political implications, the U.S. Congress voted on Tuesday in favor of a resolution requiring President Donald Trump to end military operations against Iran. The measure comes just weeks before the midterm elections, representing an explicit and direct rebuke by lawmakers of the Trump administration’s handling of the war.
Although this is the third such resolution approved by Congress—under Democratic leadership and with limited Republican support—with the aim of withdrawing U.S. forces, its timing at the conclusion of the chamber’s sessions before the November elections gives it exceptional significance. It places the administration under intense political pressure at a critical juncture.
The notable shift in this vote was the increase in the number of Republican lawmakers joining Democrats to seven, compared with only four in previous attempts. Among them were lawmakers representing competitive districts, reflecting clear divisions within the Republican camp over the Iran issue.
Explaining his position, Republican Representative Zach Nunn said on X that his stance stemmed from his opposition to “open-ended wars.” He stressed the need for Congress to reclaim its constitutional responsibility, arguing that it is possible to pressure Tehran and pursue peace without becoming embroiled in a broad military conflict.
Trump, meanwhile, responded to the legislative rebellion with a sharp attack on the Republican lawmakers who voted in favor of the resolution, turning the vote into a test of his popularity and control over the party.
While Democrats are preparing to bring the resolution to a vote in the Senate later this week, uncertainty remains over whether they can secure enough votes for its passage—particularly in light of previous instances in which intense pressure from the White House derailed similar efforts at the last minute.
