End of the Trump-Musk Relationship: Warnings and Accusations

The relationship between former U.S. President Donald Trump and businessman Elon Musk, owner of the platform X (formerly Twitter), ended on Saturday. Trump issued stern warnings of severe consequences should Musk support Democratic candidates, while Musk openly expressed no intention of rekindling ties with Trump. The mutual accusations and differing perspectives have escalated tensions between the two.
In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump warned Musk of imminent repercussions, stating, "If he supports Democratic candidates, he will face consequences... very severe consequences," without specifying what those consequences might be. He also confirmed that he has no plans to repair his relationship with Tesla’s CEO, saying: "I don’t want to work on repairing the relationship. No, I’m not interested."
Regarding accusations, Trump criticized Musk for showing insufficient respect for the presidential office, stating: "That’s very bad because he doesn’t respect the position... you can't show disrespect to the presidency." Musk responded to Trump’s criticisms with a series of tweets, including a deleted post suggesting alleged past connections between Trump and Jeffrey Epstein, who was charged with sexual crimes. Trump replied, calling it "old news... even Epstein’s lawyer said I had no relation to him."
The primary feud started when Musk criticized the Republican spending bill known as the "Beautiful Single-Factor Bill," which was passed by the House. Trump expressed disappointment in Musk’s support for this legislation, saying, "I am very frustrated. I helped Elon a lot... he knew the details of the bill well."
In an unexpected escalation, Musk tweeted calls for Trump’s impeachment, criticizing his economic policies as likely to lead to an economic recession. Trump responded via Truth Social, telling Musk, "I don’t mind your coup against me, but you should have done it months ago." Trump also suggested halting government support and federal contracts benefiting Musk’s companies, especially SpaceX.
Regarding these potential actions, Trump said he has the authority but has not yet considered doing so. He added that Musk’s opposition did not affect the chances of passing the legislation, expressing strong confidence that the Senate would approve the bill before Independence Day. Musk had previously supported Trump financially in the 2024 campaign with more than a quarter of a billion dollars and was appointed earlier as head of the "Department of Government Efficiency," overseeing layoffs and the closure of federal agencies.
In concluding his remarks, Trump noted that the disagreement with Musk might have highlighted some positives of the bill, as it increased public engagement and awareness of its benefits. He expressed regret that Elon appears distressed and heartbroken over the disputes, calling the situation unfortunate but reflective of their complex relationship.
These developments reveal growing tensions between the two and raise questions about the future of their relationship and its implications for the American political and economic landscape.
