Leadership Dispute Over Restructuring Pits Division 62 Commander Against Damascus
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Muhammad al-Jasim, known as "Abu Amsha," commander of Division 62 in the Syrian army, refused during a summons to the military leadership in Damascus to relinquish his post in exchange for a leadership role in the Central Region Corps. During the meeting held as part of efforts to restructure military formations, he demanded appointment as the corps commander rather than demotion or reassignment.
According to the Observatory, international and local actors asked the transitional Syrian leadership to curb Abu Amsha’s influence by removing him from his area of control and separating him from his local backing, citing accusations that he committed abuses against civilians in recent years. Sources say Damascus is handling the matter cautiously because Abu Amsha still commands significant influence and a power base within his territory, as well as tribal standing in parts of the central region, making direct measures risky.
The Observatory added that Abu Amsha reportedly enjoys support from elements within the Turkish government, which complicates any attempt to reduce his standing or reshuffle his military role and ties such moves to sensitive political and security calculations. Military alertness around Division 62 positions under his command has continued since yesterday evening, with ongoing troop movements and reinforcements in the area for more than 15 consecutive hours.
