Lebanese Security Detains Senior Syrian Regime Officer in Beirut
Lebanese authorities arrested Major General Adel Issa, commander of the former Syrian Army’s 17th Division, upon his arrival at the Syrian Embassy in Beirut to complete an administrative procedure.
Agence France-Presse reported that the arrest follows serious accusations against him related to killings, torture, and crimes against humanity committed during years of the Syrian conflict.
Issa’s detention carries political and security significance amid increased judicial and security coordination between Beirut and Damascus and the Syrian authorities’ efforts to pursue former officials accused of abuses. This is the first time Lebanon has detained a former Syrian officer among the dozens of military and security figures accused of crimes under the previous regime.
A judicial source said the Deputy Public Prosecutor, Judge Ahmad Rami al-Hajj, ordered Issa’s detention and transferred him to the detention facility at the Palace of Justice in Beirut to investigate his legal status and the allegations. The judge also sent a letter to the Syrian public prosecutor requesting the case file and available evidence against Issa to decide whether to extradite him in accordance with legal procedures.
