The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement issued today, Sunday, that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi has arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on an official mission. Upon his arrival, Safadi was received by the Syrian regime's president Bashar al-Assad.

The ministry clarified, through its official account on the "X" platform, that Safadi's visit program includes a meeting with Syrian regime president Bashar al-Assad. Additionally, the Jordanian minister is scheduled to hold a session of talks with his Syrian counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh.

In a related context, Assad received the Jordanian minister who carries a verbal message from the Jordanian monarch King Abdullah II. This message focuses on efforts to find a solution to the Syrian crisis and address its various repercussions, in addition to discussing a number of bilateral files and current situations in the region.

This visit comes amid accelerating regional developments, as Jordan seeks to enhance its role as a key player in the region. This diplomatic initiative is expected to contribute to opening new channels of communication between Damascus and Amman, which may reflect on efforts to achieve stability in the region.

This step indicates a Jordanian desire to reassess relations with Syria, which have witnessed tensions in recent years, although Jordanian efforts are colliding with the Syrian regime's continued smuggling of drugs into Jordanian territory. According to observers, this is carried out in coordination between smugglers and Syrian regime officers in the southern region, which is also subject to clear Iranian influence.
