U.S. federal authorities have arrested Abdulrahman Alfozan, an engineer at leading artificial intelligence company OpenAI, following criminal charges alleging that he attempted to intercept confidential communications.

According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice, Alfozan is accused of secretly placing a concealed audio-recording device in one of the company’s executive meeting rooms to capture sensitive conversations without the participants’ knowledge or consent.

The company discovered the device and notified the relevant authorities, who launched an investigation and arrested the suspect.

The incident once again highlights the significant security challenges major technology companies face in protecting their intellectual property and confidential data from insider threats, amid growing concerns about corporate espionage in the highly competitive artificial intelligence sector.
