Rasha Omran denounces arrest of Syrian after criticizing the interim government: "What a shame, Lebanon"
Syrian writer Rasha Omran expressed anger in a Facebook post after a Syrian national was handed over from Lebanon to Syrian authorities following criticisms of what he called the "interim government." Omran wrote: "No country in the world has handed a Syrian over to Assad's regime because he insulted Assad.. Today Lebanon handed over the regime’s man — a TikToker mocking al-Joulani — and they arrested the guy.. What a shame, Lebanon, truly."
The arrested man, identified as Hussein al-Ahmad, known as "Hichu," was detained by Syrian authorities in coordination with Lebanese counterparts, officials said. His arrest followed a video recorded in front of the Syrian embassy in Beirut in which he allegedly directed insults and obscene language at Syrian President Ahmad al-Shar' and his wife.
Lebanese prosecutors had previously issued a judicial request regarding al-Ahmad on charges of undermining the prestige of the Syrian state and violating Lebanese laws that prohibit provocative behavior and public insults directed at diplomatic missions.
Later, Syrian Internal Security Forces announced that al-Ahmad was apprehended after being "tracked at the Syria–Lebanon border" in coordination with the General Intelligence Directorate. Authorities stated he was detained on charges of insulting the state and its symbols and deliberately provoking public sentiment, and that he will be referred to the competent court to face legal proceedings.
