Under International Sponsorship… Syrian Kurdish Parties Agree on a Common Vision for the Future

Under U.S. and French sponsorship, and with the supervision of Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi, several Syrian Kurdish parties have reached a historic agreement outlining a unified vision for their future.

A correspondent for Al Arabiya/Al Hadath reported on Monday that the Kurdish National Council (KNC) and the Kurdish Unity Parties had finalized the drafting of this agreement.

The document acknowledges that the prior agreement between Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) forms one of the pillars of the envisioned future for Syria. It also stipulates "the recognition of Kurdish political representation in the country and the necessity for the constitution to acknowledge the Kurdish people."

Additionally, the agreement states that Syria should be a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized state. The Kurdish parties have agreed to adopt this vision as the foundation for negotiations with Damascus.

On March 10, interim Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa signed an agreement in Damascus with the SDF commander to integrate the latter into the new Syrian army. This agreement, which came at a politically sensitive time following the fall of former regime leader Bashar al-Assad, stipulated the merger of SDF-controlled civil and military institutions in northeastern Syria into the state structure, placing border crossings, airports, and oil and gas fields under the new administration’s control in Damascus.

However, three days after signing, Al-Sharaa announced the adoption of the "constitutional declaration," which made no reference to the Kurds, sparking dissatisfaction within the Syrian Democratic Council, the political umbrella of SDF.
