Wail Aqeel Detained After More Than a Year and a Half of Pursuit
Syrian journalist Hazem Dakal confirmed the detention of Wail Aqeel, the former manager of the Police football team, following efforts to track him down that lasted more than a year and a half, according to Dakal.
Dakal said the pursuit was accompanied by various forms of pressure and intimidation, which he accused Aqeel and others of carrying out. He added that some of those involved were members of the police force in the capital, Damascus, whom he described as linked to corruption.
Aqeel is accused of involvement in the detention of dozens of opponents of the former Syrian regime, including the brother of journalist Hazem Dakal. According to Dakal, his brother was forcibly disappeared in 2013 and was later killed under torture in Saydnaya Prison.
