The Security Council meeting at US-Russian request reflects international concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Syria and the instability of the temporary caretaker government

British news agency "Reuters" reported on Sunday, citing diplomats, that the United States and Russia are seeking to hold a special session of the UN Security Council on Monday to discuss the escalating violence in Syria.
The Syrian coastal areas have been experiencing increasing security disturbances for several days, resulting in more than a thousand people killed and wounded. The provinces of Tartus and Latakia have witnessed widespread killings carried out by forces belonging to the temporary Syrian caretaker government.
Informed sources from the security agencies of the transitional government disclosed that the Syrian Ministry of Defense and security agencies have declared a state of maximum alert in all Syrian governorates, in anticipation of any rapid field developments.
The sources explained that "the Syrian Arab Army announced general military mobilization of its forces in several Syrian governorates," reflecting the seriousness of the current situation and the possibility of expanding confrontations.
The sources noted that "sleeper cells linked to the former Bashar al-Assad regime in the governorates of Damascus and its countryside, Homs, Hama, Deir ez-Zor, and the Syrian coast are preparing to carry out sabotage operations in support of remnants of the regime in the governorates of Tartus and Latakia," which threatens to undermine the fragile stability in the country.
The capital Damascus is witnessing an intensified security presence, where security agencies of the transitional government have set up numerous checkpoints at the western entrances to the city, with a notable presence in public squares and patrol cars belonging to security agencies roaming the streets, amid fears of growing instability that reflects the failure of the previous centralized governance model which was a main cause of the Syrian crisis.
