Widespread Discontent Among Latakia Pensioners After Nearly 13-Day Delay in Salary Payments
Latakia province is witnessing widespread discontent among many pensioners due to a delay in salary payments of nearly 13 days, prompting them to visit post offices daily in hopes of collecting their entitlements, without success.
Several pensioners who spoke to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said they wait for hours under the scorching sun amid crowded payment centers, only to return home empty-handed after being told there is no cash available to disburse their salaries.
The delay has sparked anger among a large segment of pensioners, many of whom rely on their pensions as their only source of income, especially given their advanced age and rising living costs. The impact is not limited to financial strain: some pensioners have been unable to secure essential needs such as medication, household payments, and daily necessities, increasing the economic pressure on them.
The Observatory warns that continued delays of this length exacerbate the suffering of those who depend on these payments for basic needs, calling on authorities to expedite the disbursements, establish a clear mechanism to prevent recurrence, and take into account the circumstances of the elderly who are forced to wait for hours at payment centers.
