Young man sacrifices his life to save six youths from drowning in Alexandria
A rescue attempt turned tragic on the Al-Bitash beach in the Agami district of Alexandria, where 18-year-old Egyptian Ziad Mohammed Ahmad Mahmoud drowned after saving six people who had been swept away by the waves.
According to accounts, Ziad noticed several beachgoers struggling to return to shore after currents pulled them away. Without hesitation he entered the water and succeeded in rescuing them one by one, bringing them back to safety. After the rescues, he was carried away by the waves. A search followed, but his body was later recovered and transported to the morgue while investigators opened inquiries into the circumstances.
The Central Administration for Tourism and Resorts in Alexandria announced Ziad’s death, saying he was from Dekheila and noting that the incident occurred on a closed beach not designated for public access or swimming. Authorities reiterated warnings against entering closed or unsuitable beaches, especially amid changing sea conditions and increased risks from currents and waves.
Officials also stressed that untrained, un-equipped individuals should not attempt solo rescues, as such attempts can endanger the rescuer. The six people Ziad saved survived; his action remains a human act of sacrifice that cost him his life.
