567 Days Without a Trace: Protest in Aleppo Calls for the Fate of Mahmoud al-Khatib and Murad Mahalli to Be Revealed
Journalists and activists staged a protest today, Saturday, August 29, outside the headquarters of the Internal Security Command in Aleppo Governorate, demanding that the fate of journalists Mahmoud al-Khatib and Murad Mahalli be disclosed and that the uncertainty surrounding their cases come to an end.
Participants called for an urgent and transparent investigation into the disappearance of journalist Mahmoud al-Khatib, who has been missing for 567 days without any information about his whereabouts. They also demanded that the circumstances of his disappearance be clarified and that anyone proven to have been involved in his abduction or in covering up the case be held accountable.
The protesters also called for the immediate disclosure of the fate of journalist Murad Mahalli, who has been missing for 247 days, and for him to be allowed to appear before a court and receive due legal protections, rather than remain in detention or missing without trial.
The organizers said their protest focused on upholding the rule of law, the right to know the truth, and rejecting enforced disappearances and detention outside legal frameworks. They stressed the need to safeguard the dignity and rights of Syrian citizens.
