Adnan al-Awda criticizes al-Sharaa’s administration: “Syria is hungry, and the promises are false
أحمد الشرع

Syrian writer Adnan al-Awda sharply criticized Transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa, expressing his frustration with the country’s economic and living conditions in a series of posts on Facebook.

Al-Awda, who said he was in Damascus after an absence of 13 years, said the country was suffering from hunger and theft. He criticized what he described as widespread dishonesty and corruption, and said promises made to Syrians had not been fulfilled.

He added that “people are dying of hunger” and argued that the lack of foreign aid did not explain the deteriorating conditions. He also alleged that Syrians’ money was being stolen. Al-Awda further rejected what he described as attempts to silence critics by invoking “remnants of the former regime” or through threats involving clerics and arrest.

In another post, Al-Awda contrasted what he described as promises to make Syria “the Singapore” with the country’s current reality. Reflecting on his years away from Syria, he expressed disappointment with the change he had hoped to see after the revolution.

Al-Awda concluded his posts by saying that “the revolution is coming,” expressing his anger over the current situation. His remarks come amid ongoing criticism of Syria’s economic and living conditions. The claims in his posts represent his personal views and have not been independently verified.
