al-Shar (Abu Muhammad al-Julani) requested medical treatment for his sister in Israel
أبو محمد الجولاني (أحمد الشرع )

A televised report by Israel’s Channel 11 (KAN 11) disclosed details of contacts and negotiations between officers of Military Intelligence Unit 504 and Ahmed al‑Shar (Abu Muhammad al‑Julani) during his leadership of Jabhat al‑Nusra regarding the transfer of his sister for medical treatment at Israel’s Rambam Hospital.

According to Israeli officers and analysts cited in the report, al‑Julani submitted the request through intermediaries. The Israeli intelligence side gave preliminary approval, seeing potential intelligence value in the operation, and conditioned entry on the sister not being accompanied by an explosive belt and on her submitting to security arrangements and inspection.

The report said negotiations collapsed when al‑Julani refused to have his sister remove the explosive belt and undergo inspection in front of Israeli security personnel, which halted the arrangements.

Analysts quoted in the report said the episode highlights a pragmatic complexity in al‑Julani’s character: he showed willingness to seek aid from a party he ideologically deems an “enemy and infidel,” while simultaneously imposing red lines by refusing compliance with security and inspection measures that ended the deal.
