Appeal to Determine Fate of Reem Muhammad Munir After Loss of Contact in Rif Damascus
Anat for Justice and Human Rights today called for an immediate and thorough investigation to determine the fate of Reem Muhammad Munir, 30, whose contact was lost on the afternoon of 10 August 2026.
According to the organization, Munir — married, a mother of two children (ages 8 and 6), and a homemaker — left her husband's relative’s home in al-Ma‘damiya al-Sharqi (eastern suburb) of Rif Damascus at about 13:30 to look for a rental property. She made a phone call to her husband around 14:00, after which all contact was suddenly lost and she has not been reachable since. Her brother filed a missing-person report with the competent authorities on 12 August 2026.
Anat urged authorities to take rapid and effective measures to locate Munir, including identifying the last place she was seen, interviewing witnesses, reviewing available CCTV footage, legally tracing communications, and preserving and examining any evidence that could clarify her whereabouts or the circumstances of her disappearance. The organization also demanded regular updates to the family and protections for the family and anyone providing information from threats or intimidation.
Anat warned against merely registering the report without conducting a substantive field investigation, stressing that the rights to life, liberty, and personal security require prompt state action.
The organization called on anyone who saw Munir after she left the relative’s home on 10 August 2026 or who has reliable information about her movements or whereabouts to contact her family or the relevant authorities immediately, and appealed to the public to refrain from sharing rumors or unverified information to protect the integrity of the investigation and the family’s privacy.
