Arrest of One of the Most Notorious Drug Traffickers, Wissam Assad

Syrian General Intelligence, in cooperation with the relevant authorities at the Ministry of Interior, successfully carried out a high-profile security operation that led to the arrest of the criminal Wissam Assad, one of the most prominent drug traffickers involved in numerous crimes during the previous regime of Bashar Assad.

A security source announced that the operation was part of the ministry’s strategy to enhance security and pursue wanted individuals. It was executed by one of the special mission teams affiliated with the Ministry of Interior through a carefully planned and precise ambush, which successfully lured and detained him. This reflects the commitment to eradicate sources of crime and protect society.

 

The source further stated that this step underscores the Syrian authorities’ determination to continue their campaign against drugs and organized crime, and to bring criminals to justice in order to ensure security and stability across the country.

This operation marks an important milestone in the Syrian government's efforts to bolster societal security, reinforce the rule of law, and confront all forms of organized crime threatening the nation’s safety.

Wissam Assad, a cousin of former Syrian President Bashar Assad, emerged during the years of conflict in Syria as a controversial figure due to his actions and statements.

He gained notoriety for participating in the crackdown on Syrian opposition figures and flaunting the violence he inflicted upon them, whether through videos or posts he published. Despite his crimes, Wissam appeared in recorded videos showcasing his wealth, including a luxury car worth over $200,000, daring critics and claiming that his presence in Syria grants him the right to enjoy the country’s resources.
