Damascus: University Student Killed and Civilian Injured by Security Officer

In one of the tragic incidents, a university student at the Faculty of Law was killed, and his cousin was injured due to direct gunfire by a security officer. The officer lured the two young men onto the ascending road near the Unknown Soldier monument, asked them to stop, and then opened fire with a machine gun, which resulted in the student's immediate death and the injury of his cousin, who survived the incident.
Syria witnessed an escalation in retaliatory behaviors and executions in 2025, with the number of victims since the beginning of the year reaching 978 people, including 926 men, 31 women, and 21 children, distributed across various regions.
Below is the distribution of victims of retaliatory violence across Syrian governorates during the year:
- Damascus: 47 victims, including 46 men and one woman, 25 cases due to sectarian affiliation.
- Rural Damascus: 90 victims, including 88 men and one woman, 17 sectarian cases.
- Homs: 321 victims, including 295 men, 17 women, and 9 children, 194 cases due to sectarian affiliation.
- Hama: 201 victims, including 191 men, 6 women, 4 children, 128 sectarian cases.
- Lattakia: 95 victims, including 85 men, 4 women, and 6 children, 73 sectarian cases.
- Aleppo: 81 victims, all men, 3 sectarian cases.
- Tartus: 69 victims, including 67 men, one woman, and one child, 54 sectarian cases.
- Idlib: 19 victims, all men.
- Sweida: 5 victims, all men, 3 sectarian cases.
- Daraa: 41 victims, including 40 men and a child.
- Deir ez-Zor: 9 victims, all men.
