Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated at a press conference in Helsinki today, Wednesday, that U.S. President Donald Trump's acknowledgment of Greenland's right to self-determination, while expressing his continued interest in it being part of the United States, is extremely important.

Trump reiterated his interest in the annexation of Greenland in a speech he delivered to Congress yesterday, where he painted a picture of prosperity and security for the "amazing" people of the island.

Greenland is a self-governing territory that follows the Kingdom of Denmark.

Løkke Rasmussen added that Trump "said they respect Greenland's right to self-determination, and I believe that was the most significant part of the speech."

He noted that Denmark and Greenland share common interests with the United States regarding the security of the Arctic region.

"We are ready to work with our American friends to achieve that, but of course, it will be based on the fact that we are the Kingdom of Denmark," he said.

For his part, the Danish Defense Minister stated that President Trump's plans to annex Greenland "will not come to fruition."
