Lebanon Arrests Five-Member Network Suspected of Planning Attacks Against Syrian Forces
Lebanese authorities arrested five people—three Syrians and two Lebanese—on suspicion of forming a network that was planning to carry out attacks against government forces in Syria’s coastal region, a Lebanese judicial source told Agence France-Presse.
The source, who requested anonymity, said that one of the Syrian detainees was a former colonel in Syrian intelligence. Authorities also seized machine guns, hand grenades, sniper rifles and explosives from members of the network.
According to preliminary investigations, the network was being run by a major general in the disbanded Syrian army who resides in Moscow and was described as being close to former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The source added that members of the network had received military training in eastern Lebanon from Hezbollah fighters, noting that investigations were still underway to uncover further details and identify parties linked to the network.
