Saladin Statue to Be Relocated Amid Public Controversy
صلاح الدين الأيوبي

The Damascus Governorate announced on Saturday that the statue of Saladin will be moved from its current location in front of the Damascus Citadel as part of a project to redevelop the surrounding area. The statue is expected to be installed at a new site once maintenance and restoration work is complete.

The governorate said the move aims to repair damage to the monument and preserve its artistic and historical value. Officials are currently assessing a suitable location for the statue’s return, taking into account its symbolic and heritage significance.

The statue dates back to 1993 and was sculpted by Syrian artist Abdullah al-Sayed to mark 800 years since Saladin’s death in 1193.

It depicts the Ayyubid leader on horseback, with two Frankish captives behind him: Reynald of Châtillon and King Guy of Lusignan. The scene recalls Saladin’s victory at the Battle of Hattin in 1187.
