Syrian-German doctor arrested on charges of undermining the prestige of the state
The director of the Syrian Center for Justice and Accountability, Mohammad Al-Abdallah, confirmed that Syrian authorities detained Dr. Hussein Ali Al-Ali Al-Hamid, a native of Deir ez-Zor who holds German citizenship, while he was entering Syria via the Syria–Lebanon border crossing.
Al-Abdallah wrote on his Facebook page that the arrest was related to Al-Hamid’s criticism of conditions inside Syria, and that he was charged with "undermining the prestige of the state" before being transferred to the Electronic Crimes Branch in Damascus.
According to Al-Abdallah, Dr. Hussein had visited Syria several times previously and there are no personal allegations or other cases against him. He is currently held at the Electronic Crimes Branch of the Criminal Investigation Directorate.
