Syrian Parliament Announces Abolition of “Terrorism Court” and Its Legal Consequences
Syrian lawmakers announced on Wednesday the abolition of the “Terrorism Court” and all legal effects and consequences arising from its decisions and rulings, following a vote on the measure during a parliamentary session.
Mohammad Sido, a lawmaker representing the Afrin area, said in a post on his official Facebook account: “The notorious Terrorism Court has been abolished following a vote by the Syrian Parliament.”
Bisher al-Hawi, a member of parliament, also told Syria TV that the council had approved “the abolition of the Terrorism Court and all its legal effects” after deliberations during Wednesday’s session.
Al-Hawi, who represents Aleppo province, had previously submitted an official request to abolish the Terrorism Court and end all legal consequences resulting from its decisions and verdicts issued since its establishment.
The court was established in 2012 under a decree issued by former regime president Bashar al-Assad, with the stated aim of handling cases classified as “terrorism” and prosecuting those accused in them.
