The Daughter of the Syrian Mother
سنديانة الساحل

Syrian woman Zarqa Sabahi stirred controversy on social media platforms with a painful video, where she faced the perpetrators of the murder of her two sons and her grandson in the Syrian coastal area, which has witnessed horrific violations against civilians in recent days.

In an interview with the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Zarqa's daughter revealed details of the horrific incident, stating that masked and uncovered-faced armed men wearing military uniforms stormed the family home in the village of Qabu al-Awamiyah in rural Latakia. The assailants used explosives to break the locks of the house, then looted its contents and forced the three young men to leave.

The daughter mentioned that the militants asked the victims, "Are you Alawite or Sunni?" before opening fire on them, despite the victims’ assurances that they were civilians and unarmed.

She added that even after the heinous crime, the killers refused to grant the mother the dignity of burying her children, as their bodies were left lying behind the house for four days, under the watch of Zarqa, who insisted on staying at the site despite threats and intimidation, fearing that security forces would burn the bodies, which would lead to the loss of hope for their burial.

The daughter also clarified that some of the perpetrators still reside in a neighboring house, after it was seized from its owners who fled from a similar fate. She said, "My mother sees their faces every day," demanding the authorities to intervene immediately to arrest them and hold them publicly accountable before the international community, emphasizing that these individuals must not escape punishment after destroying their lives twice.

The video documenting this incident continues to provoke widespread outrage, especially as the militants, whose identities have yet to be determined, directed sectarian remarks at the sober mother in her predominantly Alawite region.

Despite the tragedy she is enduring, Zarqa appeared in the video, demonstrating strength and courage in confronting the assailants.

The attacks that occurred in the Syrian coastal area have caused local and international shock, as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that many civilians lost their lives in what is considered one of the most severe waves of violence in recent years.
