The death toll from the earthquake in eastern Afghanistan exceeds 800, with thousands injured

An Afghan government spokesperson reported on Monday that the earthquake that struck the eastern region of the country resulted in more than 800 deaths and over 2,800 injuries.

During a press conference in Kabul, Zabihullah Mujahid stated that the number of casualties and injuries is concentrated in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. Kunar alone recorded 800 deaths and 2,500 injuries, while Nangarhar, which is only about 8 kilometers from the earthquake’s epicenter, registered 12 fatalities and 255 injuries.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale, occurred at 19:17 UTC, just before midnight local time, in Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan, near the border with Pakistan.
