A Leader in SDF proposes forming a joint military council with the Syrian government

Sipan Hamo, a leader in the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), proposed the idea of forming a joint military council with the transitional Syrian government, as an initial step toward rebuilding "a new national army that includes all Syrians and is based on a comprehensive democratic project."

In an extensive interview with Hawar Agency, Hamo explained that the process of integration into the Syrian army cannot be carried out in a traditional or centralized manner. Instead, it must be based on principles of democracy, decentralization, and women's freedom.

He pointed out that the SDF does not refuse to join the Syrian army but wants such integration to be based on a clear political foundation that guarantees the rights of all Syrians. He emphasized that the army reflects the political system, and therefore any actual integration requires initially establishing new political rules that reflect the will of the people before delving into military details.

Hamo also confirmed that creating a joint military council could be the beginning of reconfiguring the military institution on national foundations, away from the old mentality that has governed Syria for decades.

He noted that the SDF has gained significant military and political experience during the years of fighting ISIS, making it a key player in efforts to build a national army, capable of managing strategic battles and protecting large areas of Syria.

Hamo criticized the lack of political will in Damascus, affirming that the current government has thwarted many dialogue attempts, including the March 10 agreement, and continues to rely on a centralized political model that excludes the northeastern Syrian regions from the electoral process.

He concluded by saying that these policies reflect the persistence of an old mentality, while Syria's future requires a genuine political transformation based on democracy and social justice.
