Russia Warns Against Deployment of American Missiles in Japan: Preparations to Face Security Challenges

Lyudmila Vorobyova, the director of the Asian department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, revealed that Moscow is prepared to take appropriate steps if medium-range American missiles are deployed in Japan, warning Tokyo of the potential consequences of such a move.
In an interview with Sputnik, Vorobyova stated, "We have repeatedly warned Tokyo that, as a result of this increasing military cooperation with the West, if American medium-range missiles enter Japan, we will be obliged to take the necessary countermeasures to enhance our defensive capabilities to address the security threats facing Russia from Japanese territory."
Vorobyova pointed out that the specific details of Russia's response plans will be formulated by the relevant departments in line with long-term strategic goals and interests.
She added that Moscow does not disregard the right of countries to enhance their security, but believes that the deployment of American ground-based missiles, whether medium or short-range, in various parts of the world, including the Asia-Pacific region, has no positive effect on stability. On the contrary, it fuels an arms race and increases the level of conflict, raising strategic risks.
It is noteworthy that at the end of November 2024, Akira Moto, the Japanese ambassador to Russia, stated in an interview with National Defense Magazine that Tokyo and Washington are not currently planning to deploy American medium and short-range missiles on Japanese territory.
