Syrian Democratic Forces Disbanded Following Agreement with Damascus
Mazloum Abdi, commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), announced on Tuesday that the group would be disbanded as an independent military force under an agreement with Syria’s new authorities in Damascus to integrate its military and security institutions into those of the state.
In a speech delivered in Arabic and Kurdish before journalists and broadcast on state television, Abdi said: “Today, we announce the end of the mission of the Syrian Democratic Forces and, with full responsibility, declare their dissolution as an independent military force.”
State television reported that the decision also includes the dissolution of the Autonomous Administration and all military and civilian formations affiliated with it, along with their full integration into Syrian state institutions.
The announcement came after a meeting between Abdi and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the presidential palace. The meeting was attended by Ilham Ahmed, a senior official in the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration, and Siban Hamo, a prominent Kurdish military commander who serves as deputy defense minister for the eastern region.
Abdi said: “The circumstances have changed today, and the country has entered a new phase whose defining features are peace and participation in building a new Syria.” He added that the decision to disband the group came “following the agreement with President al-Sharaa and the completion of the process of integrating our forces into the brigades of the Syrian army.”
On August 20, Abdi had announced the completion of the integration of the military, security, and administrative institutions affiliated with the SDF into Syrian state institutions. He said the move would pave the way for “a new phase” focused on political efforts to ensure Kurdish rights in the Syrian constitution.
