Syrian Foreign Minister’s Remarks on the Druze Spark Widespread Controversy on Social Media
الشيباني

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Shaban’s recent statements regarding the Druze community have ignited widespread debate across social media platforms. During a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow today, Shaban emphasized that the Syrian government has no intention of eradicating the Druze. Many viewed this statement as a significant clarification amid ongoing challenges.

The minister pointed out that some are attempting to exploit the Druze to interfere in Syrian affairs, particularly by Israel. He also mentioned that armed groups in Sweida are trying to prove the government’s inability to maintain security. Political activist Mohammed Yassar questioned this reasoning on the platform X (formerly Twitter), asking: “Is this logic even credible?! Is such language appropriate for a Foreign Minister claiming there’s no intention of genocide?”

In a sarcastic tone, the account "Free Kurdistan Son" commented: “May Allah increase your goodness. We thought you intended to commit genocide. Sorry for the wrong assumption.”

In his statements, Shaban, according to Sputnik agency, stated that Syria is tired of war and that Damascus has no aggressive plans against Israel. He further explained that the core issue lies in weapons outside state control, and emphasized that clear directives exist not to discriminate against any component of Syrian society, while protecting all sects. However, he noted that Israeli intervention complicates efforts, adding, “The retreat was followed by a clash between Bedouins and the armed forces in Sweida. The solution is for the state to protect civilians, as any foreign intervention would result in chaos.”

The minister concluded by affirming that the Syrian government is responsible for all its citizens, warning that any attempts to manipulate this issue could lead to renewed chaos. He stressed that maintaining national unity is a collective responsibility for all Syrians.
