Syrian Observatory Warns of the Impact of Attacks on Civil Peace in Tal Abyad
Dozens of General Security vehicles moved from the city of Raqqa toward Tal Abyad (Kre Sê), north of Raqqa, in an attempt to contain escalating tensions following attacks on Kurdish displaced people who had returned to the area to reclaim their homes, land, and property.
Around 100 Kurdish displaced people remain inside the Tal Abyad district administration building, where they are surrounded by displaced people living in the area. Tensions continue over attempts by the Kurdish group to return to their places of origin.
The developments come amid the absence of a public and decisive response from the Integration Committee or the presidential delegation tasked with overseeing the process, despite attacks on returning displaced people and growing concerns for their safety. Several of their vehicles were smashed and set on fire as they tried to reclaim their property.
The incidents have raised fears that the security situation in the city could deteriorate. Calls have mounted for urgent intervention to protect the displaced, prevent further attacks, and ensure their safe return to their homes and property in a manner that upholds their rights and prevents the forcible imposition of a new reality.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights warned that silence over the siege and attacks on Kurdish displaced people, and the prevention of their access to their homes, land, and property, could lead to further violations, threaten civil peace, and entrench a policy of imposing a fait accompli by force.
The Observatory said that failure to hold those responsible for incitement, assault, vandalism, and arson accountable could encourage such acts to recur and undermine confidence in the possibility of a safe return for displaced people. It called for immediate intervention to end the siege, protect those returning, and guarantee their right to reclaim their property and return voluntarily, safely, and with dignity.
