Tensions and Clashes Escalate in Jdeidet Artouz Amid Regional Friction
The town of Jdeidet Artouz in the Damascus countryside has witnessed rising tensions following clashes between several local residents and individuals from Deir ez-Zor Province who live in the area.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a protest took place in the town, during which chants containing insults and accusations against people from Deir ez-Zor were heard. Some protesters reportedly described them as “traitors” and “ISIS members,” amid a clear escalation in tensions.
The developments coincided with the deployment of Public Security forces in the area, in an effort to prevent renewed confrontations and contain the situation after acts of violence and damage to some property were reported.
Following a period of uneasy calm, clashes broke out again on Friday evening between the two sides. Preliminary information indicated that one local resident was injured.
Sources also reported that several people from Deir ez-Zor had cut down trees in the area, alongside reports of vandalism. The Internal Security Forces subsequently reinforced their presence in Jdeidet Artouz amid fears that the unrest could spread.
The incidents have raised concerns over the escalation of inflammatory rhetoric and regional tensions, as calls grow for those responsible to be held accountable individually and for entire communities not to be collectively blamed for specific acts.
