The Era of Decree-Issuing from the Iranian Regime Is Over for Good

When followers recall the Iranian regime’s role in Lebanon over the past four decades and compare those successive visits with Ali Larijani’s recent trip to Beirut, they will notice a stark difference—like the contrast between spring and autumn. The latest visit has even become an unprecedented scandal for the Iranian regime.
It is no longer difficult to confidently assert that the regime’s current regional influence and impact have significantly diminished compared to the past. The regime, which once relied on this role as a front against its enemies, away from the streets of Tehran and Isfahan, is now facing a severe crisis. Its declining influence is not just speculation but a palpable reality that became clear during Larijani’s visits to Iraq and Lebanon.
Larijani apparently was keen to begin his trip in Iraq because he knew that the regime’s influence in the "Iraqi sphere" was much greater than in the "Lebanese sphere," especially after the setback of their military ally in Lebanon, Hezbollah. The security agreement with Iraq might have been a show of strength directed at Lebanon before Larijani even set foot at Beirut Airport.
Unexpectedly, Larijani received a cold reception and a slap in the face from Lebanese leaders. His visit to Lebanon clearly failed, especially in light of Lebanese statements rejecting Iranian interventions. These declarations revealed a bitter truth for the regime: Lebanon, which was once under its influence, now openly opposes it in broad daylight. Lebanese President explicitly stated: “We reject any interference in our internal affairs from any party, and we want the Lebanese arena to remain safe and stable.”
In Iraq, much controversy was stirred around the security agreement Larijani signed with the Iraqi National Security Advisor, which turned out to be just a memorandum of understanding, not a binding treaty—completely contradicting Larijani’s portrayal.
Upon returning to Tehran, and attempting to soften the regional rejection, Larijani issued a statement claiming: “Iranian policy is based on supporting regional countries if they request assistance, without interfering in their internal affairs or imposing commands.” However, what he overlooked is that the era of issuing commands is over, and interference in forming governments or deciding on presidents can no longer be repeated.
The cost paid by the Iranian people
What Ali Larijani faced during this visit will not only have repercussions in Lebanon and Iraq but is part of larger consequences that will affect the entire region—culminating in Iran itself. Just as the Iranian people's suffering from the disasters caused by the regime’s nuclear program, its interventions in the region have brought disaster upon the Iranian people. This nation, boiling with anger over the worsening conditions—resulting from four decades of reckless policies—does not want to bear the costs of the regime’s regional adventures.
The Iranian people are well aware that if they do not strive to topple this regime today or tomorrow, the bitter harvest will always be waiting for them.
