The European Union Condemns Sectarian Violence in Syria and Calls for Accountability
In a move reflecting a significant escalation, the European Parliament today, Thursday, overwhelmingly approved a resolution (625 out of 720 votes) strongly condemning the targeting of religious minorities and places of worship in Syria. This comes amid increasing concerns over ongoing violations and the deteriorating situation on the ground.
In new statements, European MPs expressed their concern over the appointment of figures affiliated with the dissolved Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, who have previously been involved in serious human rights violations, to positions within the Syrian transitional authorities. This poses a serious threat to freedom of belief and the future of justice in the country, according to the resolution.
During the discussions, MPs emphasized that the failure of the transitional authorities to prosecute those responsible for the massacres of and has created a fertile ground for terrorist activities, including the explosion of Mar Elias Church. They warned that the lack of transparency and accountability could undermine peace and stability efforts and hinder any political or security process in Syria.
The European resolution called on the transitional authorities to take several measures, including:
- Conducting immediate and transparent investigations into all crimes and holding the responsible accountable.
- Protecting religious and ethnic minorities from threats and violations.
- Providing a clear timetable for holding free and inclusive elections.
- Ensuring fair representation for all components of Syrian society.
- Supporting transitional justice mechanisms and combating impunity.
- Respecting freedom of religion as a fundamental condition for any future European support.
Similarly, the European Union reiterated its conditional support for the reconstruction of Syria, expressing a wish that progress in justice and human rights be prerequisites for this support. It also urged the imposition of sanctions on those continuing to violate human rights and threaten freedom of belief to ensure the country's future safety and stability.
