Abdulsalam Akko Dies a Month After Being Released from Hama Central Prison
Young Syrian man Abdulsalam Akko, 24, has died approximately one month after being released from Hama Central Prison, where he had spent a year in detention under the former Syrian government, according to local sources.
Sources said Akko was released in critical condition after a severe deterioration in his health during his detention. He was reportedly in a near-clinical-death state before eventually succumbing to the effects of the conditions he had endured.
Akko had previously been detained by Bashar al-Assad’s regime for nearly four years because of his participation in the revolutionary movement in the city of Homs. He was released during the liberation operations and the opening of prisons.
Akko came from a family that had already lost one of its sons; according to the same sources, one of his brothers had previously been killed.
Akko’s death once again highlights the health and humanitarian conditions faced by detainees in Syrian prisons, particularly those released while suffering from serious illnesses and injuries resulting from detention conditions and inadequate medical care. Previous reports and testimonies have documented the deterioration of medical and food services in Syrian prisons, despite statements by former officials claiming that detainees received adequate care.
