Regional communities align on governance vision while strengthening cooperation across humanitarian and political domains
Youssef Jarboua, Sheikh of the Druze Unitarian Muslim community in Syria, confirmed the harmonious perspectives between the people of Sweida and Kurds in northern and eastern Syria, particularly regarding future governance structure and civil constitution. He commended the Autonomous Administration for its support of humanitarian and political issues in the country.
Jarboua noted that relations between the two communities have strengthened in recent years, prominently demonstrated during the 2018 hostage crisis when Syrian Democratic Forces offered assistance to Sweida residents in liberating women held by ISIS—reflecting the level of cooperation and mutual trust between the groups.
He emphasized the importance of a future constitution that is both civil and inclusive, guaranteeing rights for all components without discrimination. Jarboua cautioned that basing legislation on Islamic jurisprudence could lead to sectarian conflicts, contradicting Syrians' aspirations for a modern state founded on equal citizenship principles.
Regarding future governance, Jarboua explained there is consensus with the Autonomous Administration's vision on the necessity of adopting a decentralized model in Syria, whether federal or administrative, provided it emerges through national agreement that safeguards everyone's rights.
He viewed the recent agreement between Syrian Democratic Forces commander Mazloum Abdi and interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa as a positive step toward de-escalation, emphasizing the need for enhanced dialogue among Syria's diverse components.
On the humanitarian front, Jarboua acknowledged initiatives from northern and eastern Syria residents supporting those affected in the Syrian coast, noting these actions help strengthen bonds of brotherhood among Syrians, moving beyond the exclusionary policies that successive regimes attempted to impose.
