Netanyahu: Syria Was on the Verge of Violating the Understanding by Allowing Turkish Forces to Deploy at an Air Base

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel and Syria had agreed to maintain the status quo on security matters, noting that Damascus had been on the verge of violating this understanding by allowing Turkish forces to deploy at an air base near Aleppo.

In a statement, the office added that Israel had repeatedly warned Syria that such a deployment could pose a threat to its security, stressing that Tel Aviv “will not tolerate any threat to its security.”

The statement did not clarify the nature of the agreement or the mechanisms for implementing it. No immediate comment was issued by the Syrian or Turkish sides regarding the Israeli statements.

Syria strongly condemned, in two identical letters addressed to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and UN Security Council President Christina Lassen, the Israeli attack on the Abu al-Duhur military airfield in Idlib province at dawn on Tuesday. It described the attack as “an unjustified act of aggression and a flagrant violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as a dangerous escalation threatening security and stability in the region.”
