Security Scandal in Wadi Qandil, Latakia Countryside: Random Attacks and Arrests
Wadi Qandil in Latakia Governorate experienced an unprecedented security incident overnight Thursday to Friday, where residents reported an unprovoked escalation by joint forces of the Ghaṭā’iyah, municipal police, and beach police. They raided the area suddenly, beating and arresting a large number of residents and visitors without clear charges or known reasons.
According to a witness present in the compound, the campaign began after midnight. Everyone was subjected to violent assault and severe beating, including the elderly, children, and women. A woman over sixty who was with her daughters was verbally abused, threatened with a weapon, and her belongings were stolen publicly.
The witness added that the forces collected the detainees and transported them in buses to the criminal security headquarters, where they were interrogated arbitrarily—despite having no criminal record or wanted status. After hours of humiliation and insults, the detainees were released the next morning, but they left the site suffering from psychological and physical effects. The compound was seen covered with red wax, indicating injuries or martyrdom cases.
In his statement, the family spokesperson expressed deep dissatisfaction with what he called "the unprovoked assault," confirming that they are an orphaned family working to earn a living during the summer season. He emphasized that what happened caused significant harm to them and their clients, and that they only seek “truthful words, for our voice to be heard, exposing and documenting these assaults.”
Local circles and social media widely circulated waves of anger and condemnation, calling for an investigation into the incident, justice for the residents, and guarantees that such irresponsible actions will not recur, as they damage the area's security image. Confidence in the police and military has also diminished.
