Truck Drivers Say Their Vehicles and Documents Are Being Held Near Raqqa
A number of truck drivers traveling from Iraq toward inland Syria said their vehicles had been stopped and their documents confiscated at the Abu Qubay’ checkpoint near Raqqa, reportedly over claims that their loads exceeded the permitted weight limits.
According to the drivers, their loads comply with regulations and weigh no more than 60 tonnes. They denied committing any weight-related violations that would justify impounding their vehicles or holding their documents. The drivers said checkpoint personnel directed them to contact a monitoring post in the city of Tabqa to follow up on the matter. Their trucks remain detained, delaying their journeys and disrupting their work.
The drivers called on the Raqqa Transport Directorate to intervene urgently, investigate the reasons for the stoppage, and resolve their situation. They urged authorities to release the trucks and documents if the loads are confirmed to comply with regulations, and to clarify the procedures to prevent further disruption to their livelihoods.
