Adulterated Fuel Is Wrecking Syrian Drivers’ Cars—Who Is Responsible?
Dark-red gasoline has caused mechanical problems in hundreds of cars and other vehicles across several Syrian governorates, prompting affected drivers to demand compensation for repair costs.
Complaints have been reported mainly in Latakia and at fuel stations along the Baniyas–Tartus road. Similar cases have also been reported in Damascus, Aleppo, Hama, Raqqa, and Deir ez-Zor. The damage has affected fuel filters, fuel pumps, electronic sensors, and key engine components.
The Syrian Company for Petroleum Products (SADCOP) said it is following up on the complaints and circulating footage. It added that its specialist teams have begun extensive testing, collecting samples at different points in the supply chain, including at fuel stations.
The company said the samples it tested met approved standards, but acknowledged that non-compliant fuel had been found on the market. It added that investigations are ongoing to identify its source and hold those responsible to account.
