Joint Initiative Calls for Protection of Minorities in Syria and Support for Political Federalism
In a move aimed at drawing attention to the humanitarian and political situation in Syria, Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, head of the Supreme Alawite Islamic Council in Syria and the Diaspora, launched a joint initiative with Archbishop Thomas Paul Schirrmacher. It was addressed to a number of world leaders and governments, as well as international organizations, including the United Nations.
The initiative called for urgent measures to protect religious minorities in Syria, particularly the Alawite community. It also urged an end to violations against civilians and called for steps to ensure their safety.
The initiative also put forward key political demands, calling on the international community to support political federalism in Syria. Its proponents described federalism as a means of safeguarding the political and social rights of all Syrian communities and ensuring pluralism and decentralized governance.
The initiative comes amid ongoing efforts by Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal to advocate for the rights and representation of the Alawite community, as Syria continues to undergo political changes that began in late 2024.
