In a dramatic development, the Sudanese army announced that Abu Aqila Kikal, the commander of the Rapid Support Forces in Al Jazeera State, and a large number of his forces have joined its ranks. This sudden shift in loyalties represents a strong blow to the Rapid Support Forces, which controlled approximately 60-70% of this strategic state.

The army confirmed in an official statement its welcome of this step, describing it as "courageous," renewing its call for those who wish to surrender from the Rapid Support Forces elements to join its ranks.

Sources from "Al Arabiya/Al Hadath" revealed that this agreement came as a result of an initiative from civilian leaders in Al Jazeera State and Kikal's relatives, in coordination with Sudanese army intelligence.

This step gains exceptional importance due to the strategic location of Al Jazeera State, which represents the main supply artery for the capital with food and strategic goods such as wheat and corn. Kikal, who joined the Rapid Support Forces in August 2023, four months after the outbreak of the war, was leading the "Sudan Shield" forces in this important state.

This development comes at a time when the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has been ongoing for nearly 18 months, leaving behind a wide humanitarian crisis and the displacement of more than 10 million people. This reversal in loyalties may represent a turning point in the course of the conflict, with the potential to weaken the position of the Rapid Support Forces and strengthen the army's control over strategic areas.

With this sudden change, attention turns to the reactions of the Rapid Support Forces leadership and the possibility of more defections in its ranks. This development also raises questions about its potential impact on the course of negotiations and peace efforts in Sudan.
