Syria Classified at a “Serious” Hunger Level in the 2026 Global Hunger Index
الفقر في سوريا

The 2026 Global Hunger Index found that Syria had reached a “serious” level of food insecurity, scoring 31.5 points. The findings reflect the severity of the living conditions Syrians face and their declining ability to afford basic necessities amid extremely challenging economic circumstances.

Reports attribute this deterioration to economic policies pursued by the de facto authorities, which have led to a series of negative consequences. These include sharp increases in the prices of food and other essential goods, alongside official decisions to lift subsidies on basic commodities.

These policies have severely eroded the purchasing power of salaries and wages, leaving the vast majority of the population unable to meet the costs of daily life. In addition, the authorities’ decision to open markets to imports at the expense of supporting domestic production has widened the economic gap, increased the burden on citizens, and exacerbated the crisis of securing basic necessities across the country.
