Texas Senate Gives Final Approval to New Congressional Voting Map
تكساس

The Texas State Senate has given its final approval to the new voting map aimed at supporting the Republican Party, before transferring it directly to Governor Greg Abbott for signing and implementation. This move comes as former President Donald Trump seeks to support the map to help the GOP maintain its narrow majority in Congress during the 2026 midterm elections. The proposed changes include five new congressional districts that could enhance Republican prospects in the upcoming elections.

Amid efforts by the Republican Party to enforce this map, Democratic efforts in Texas included organizing a two-week strike, which led to intense activity around redistricting nationwide. In an attempt to block the law’s passage, Democratic legislators—a minority in the state—prepared to use vote-delay procedures, including organizing long-hour strikes to exert political pressure, and even leaving the state in early August to prevent quorum during the voting session. However, the session was held after their return last Wednesday, when the map was approved.

In response to Democratic actions, California, governed by Gavin Newsom, adopted similar measures to redraw districts, aiming to give the Democratic Party a chance to recover losses. The state seeks to add five congressional seats to benefit its Democrats, striving for balance and countering the changes taking place in Texas.
