The leader of the Ismaili community offers 100 million euros in support of the Syrian government
In an important gesture to support the new Syrian government and the Syrian community, Rahim Aga Khan, the leader of the Ismaili community, announced the donation of 100 million euros in Brussels. The Ismailis are considered one of the components of the Syrian community, with an estimated population of about 400,000 people across the country.
In a related context, donor countries, including the European Union, pledged yesterday (Monday) to provide assistance to Syrians totaling 5.8 billion euros. This amount is less than their previous commitments due to the lack of contribution from the United States in this context. The European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Suica, expressed her honor in announcing that donor countries have pledged a total of 5.8 billion euros, including 4.2 billion euros in grants and 1.6 billion euros in loans.
The European aid will allocate about 2.5 billion euros (approximately 2.7 billion dollars) to assist Syria in its reconstruction efforts following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad.
