The Truth About the Statements Attributed to Monif Talas Regarding His Leadership of the Syrian People
مناف طلاس

Circulating widely on social media and some websites are claims attributed to Colonel Monif Talas, who is reported to have said that he is honored to lead the Syrian people in the upcoming phase. This circulation coincided with an announcement about his upcoming lecture at the Science Po Institute in Paris on Saturday, September 13, 2025, which has raised questions and speculation about his potential political leadership role in Syria’s future.

These claims spread extensively after anonymous accounts or accounts linked to political and media activities promoted them in different formats, forming part of targeted media maneuvers surrounding Talas’s personality and his possible role in the coming period.

However, the "Taqdeer" platform team conducted an extensive investigation to verify the authenticity of these statements, and it turned out that the claims are entirely baseless. Colonel Monif Talas confirmed in a private statement to Taqdeer that the reported statements about his readiness to lead the Syrian people are unfounded. He explained that his scheduled lecture at the Science Po Institute in Paris will focus on topics related to Syrian unity, the importance of a state of institutions, and citizenship, and has nothing to do with affirming his leadership of the country.

Talas urged media outlets and activists to exercise caution and rely on official and reliable channels when reporting statements or positions, warning against being drawn into rumors or unverified news.

Monif Talas’s Lecture in Paris and the Expected Topics of Discussion

He is preparing to give a lecture at the Sciences Po Institute in Paris, invited by the Sciences Po Alumni / Cercle France-Liban network. The session will take place on Saturday, September 13, from 15:15 to 17:15, on Saint-Ghuyg Street, with simultaneous translation into French. Prior registration is required to participate.

According to the official announcement, the lecture will address regional challenges facing the Middle East, with a focus on recent developments. Talas will clarify that the content will center on important issues such as Syrian unity, the rule of institutions, and citizenship.

His current appearance in Paris forms part of a historical context tied to his personal background: he is the son of former Defense Minister Mustafa Talas and was one of the prominent officers of the Republican Guard. During the early years of the Syrian revolution, he was a member of the Central Committee of the Baath Party and was considered a figure capable of acting as an intermediary between the regime and the opposition. After his defection in 2012, his name has been associated with hopes among some circles of forming a transitional period or an alternative military council, but these discussions remained speculative media rumors and unofficial political debates.

Talas’s appearance in Paris remains within an academic and historical framework, far from any official statements about his future policies. Opinions on his potential role in the coming stage vary, amid ongoing uncertainty and speculation surrounding his political fate.
