U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that migrants had “taken over” France and called on French authorities to close the country’s borders immediately, commenting on escalating protests over the cost of living.
Trump made the remarks in a post published Monday on his Truth Social platform, following protests in France over the weekend.
“Yellow Vest” protests have taken place at hundreds of locations across the country, drawing participation from a range of groups, including high school students, farmers, and climate activists.
Tensions between police and protesters have risen in Paris and other cities, amid reports of violence and looting at stores, including luxury-brand outlets. A fire also broke out at the historic city hall in Limoges.
